91 LS400 - check engine light is on... code 71
#16
hi i do not have photos......but i didn't do anything to my egr pipe.... I removed everything else as pictured here http://www.lextreme.com/egr.html ..look at the bottom photo..you will have to add the piece of hose that you see on the right side on top of the head i think it is a 1/4 inch hose and 2 small clamps.....and you will cap off the ports on top of the throttle body..there are 3 of them....
the resistors or 1/2 watt 10,000 k and you can get them at radio shack....just plug them into the electrical connectors that you remove from the egr valve/egr vsv connector and the fuel pressure vsv....wrape electrical tape around the connectors to keep them from falling out.
the hole on the side of your intake....i made my own gasket out of a piece of vinyl.and sealed it with the right stuff and the original bolts also
i can not remember all the steps i did..maybe someone else can chime in

looking at that diagram i did not remove the accelerator bracket either.i don't know what that is about
be-careful with your vsv parts.....they break easily and cost a lot to replace

Thanks. Well I am either going to sell as-is (with the CEL on), or try to work on it when the weather breaks. Temperatures have been 20-25° below average here (highs only in the 20s!) and its not very pleasant. The shop can check it Wednesday, so I may take it then and let them deal with it.
Another thing - is that since the throttle body was cleaned, when I first press the accelerator, its kinda like its sticking. One it presses its ok, but it dont have the smoothness it once had before the throttle body cleaning. Not sure if this issue is part of the CEL or not.

Problem fixed... thanks for all of the replies. The shop cleaned the EGR system and all is well now... charged $49.00 + tax. Almost dont want to sell it now.
Oh well, but Wednesday it will have a new owner.

If your engine oil level isn't going down, its most likely the idle control valve on the power steering pump. Have you been losing power steering fluid? If so, do a search in this forum for "Idle Control Valve" and you'll find many posts about this problem.

Hey, yeah I've already fixed the PS Idle Control Valve last summer. I am actually burning oil on startup now whenever it's a little colder. Has to be my valve seals.

Also, I cleaned out the EGR filter (the small one you get to using just the screwdriver), and then pulled the fuse. Check engine light hasn't come back on yet. It's been a day.
I'm sure it will end up coming back on, but for now so far so good.

Check engine light came back. Code 71, again.
Took off EGR, cleaned out tons of buildup, put it back on, reset ecu, drove a few hours, threw code 71 again...
Not quite sure what else it could be at this point. I'll try getting the throttle body cleaned out this week.
