1996 LS400 Transmissions
The transmission in my LS400 kept getting louder till it finally gave up. It is a 1996 model. What year models will fit my car?
I have found several transmissions on craigslist, but not one for a 96 model.

I thought I was having power steering problems. I had a whining noise, that increased with the RPM. Then the transmission started slipping. Finally the trans. just quit, and at the same time, the noise went away. The car has 140,000 on it, and has never given us any real problems, so I am going to give her another transmission. I will pull the pan on this one first but I am pretty sure it is shot.

Uh oh, I just got a 98 and from 2nd to 3rd it makes a humming noise. It is not really loud but is worse when cold. Also, when it is cold it shifts pretty hard into third at around 2500RPM. Is this anything to be worried about? The car has 124K on it, was maintained well. I was going to do a tranny flush (do it myself by disconnecting the tranny line and doing the "gravity" method) as soon as it gets warmer out.

Hmm... I hear of alot of tranny problems on the 1995-97 models and wondering why? Were they that much different than the 1990-94 models? Thats one good thing about the 90-94s they have over the 95-97, is you rarely ever hear of tranny problems on the 1990-94 LS400. I have 225K on my 1991 and the transmission shifts so quietly and smooth as silk. Same deal with my old 1990 LS400, only it had around 280K. Transmission was as smooth as whipped silk.
