I don't drive an ls, but here in Buffalo, its been about a consistent 20 or below and i park out, so i usually let it warm up about 2 minutes, or until i get everything sorted, aka get my ipod worked out, and set belt and mirrors set

I've never warmed up my vehicles. I'll start them, then start driving about 10 seconds later, once the engine kicks on and comes to idle and doesn't fluctuate. I've seen no need to sit around and let the car idle and spew more carbon monoxide to our atmosphere. All my vehicles thus far have gone over 200K and passed all inspections with flying colors with no damage to cat. conv. or any emissions components.

As for my LS430, she's garaged... so no need to warm her up.

3 minutes minimum in winter , 30 seconds or so in summer . Basically until it idles down its not ready .
I live in Toronto Canada where we grow and sell snow . My car parks outside so it will get heated before it moves.
I have a 2 year old daughter and she is more important than my car so it will be warm before i put her inside .
Some good and interesting points mentioned but some are pretty much calling for worse case scenarios to be applicable. Imagine if every idled car had converter meltdown . You got bigger problems if your ecu is dumping that much fuel into it .

Their are so many variable to how long to idle and warm ,
parked in or out
temperature outside
oil viscosity

I also have deleted my clutch belt driven fan with an electric so it warms up quicker than most never mind quieter .

How can I not warm it up, when it is subzero? It just won`t move when it is cold. Sometimes 15min. idling will do.

I dont have my LS400 (1991) anymore, but when I did, I would let it warm up at least until the idle-up went down. On my other LS400 (1990), same thing. I would let it run at least until the initial idle up went down.

My other cars... same way - I let them run for about 1-4 minutes depending on the outside temp. I never just jump in and roar off... especially if its cold out.

I've always waited a few seconds for pressure to build, sometimes longer when it's cold, but then just started driving, taking it easy on the throttle until reaching operating temperature. I figure moving isn't a bad idea because you warm up the engine but also other moving parts. A toasty car is nice, but I don't mind wearing gloves (then again, it's never subzero here). At the end of the day, I doubt this decision matters much at all. If you start up and immediately hammer the throttle, yeah, you're probably not helping your engine, but beyond that it's probably a wash.

I live in so cal and i warm up my car for about 5-7min i also use mobil one fluids through out the car trans ps rear end and engine and since synthetic oil is thin it flows better in real cold weather and heat won't bother it. I've talked to friends who own the lexus ls 400 who leave it in the cold in colorado and use mobil one through out and the trans shifts right from the get go.

Bill

I put the mobile1 atf in my avalon and you can hardly tell when it shifts. But on the ls I put the Toyota type IV because of all the comment on this and other sites. Do you run the mobil 1 ATF? and how is the tranny working for you with the Mobil 1 ATF?

In the summer, I start driving instantly

In the winter, 60 seconds

Never high RPM's or abuse of any kind.

I also use Mobil 1 0W-30
Full Synthetic

I like to let my run at least 5-8 minutes so the engine is getting oil in the upper parts the most wear on your engine is when you start it up. At 30k I changed all my fluids to snythetic oil this is supposed to help keep wear down. all new high end cars are now running all synthetic fluid through out the car I was told this makes them last longer even Lexus is now running synthetics fluids.
