Realize this is an old thread, but I need some clarification. My car (ls400, 1994) is at about 97K miles and the transpan is leaking. I had it resealed a little more than 3 years ago, but, obviously, since it's leaking again, that seal did not hold (I did not do the work, an indie mechanic did).

I was told that I should now get the trans pan resealed yet again, as the 'seepage' is only going to get worse. Question: During the reseal three years ago, the 'screen' in the trans pan was cleaned. To my knowledge, that screen has never been replaced. I have read in quite a few threads that people have replaced that screen at around 100K. When I get it fixed this time, should I replace the screen, or would it be OK to do another cleaning? I would like to avoid the cost to replace it, unless a) it's cheap or b) would create more risk for the transmission. I thought it was metal, so why wouldn't cleaning a metal screen work just as well as replacing? Thanks.

Also, if anyone knows how much ATF-IV I need to buy for a trans pan reseal, that would be great.

Default tranny filter replacement

It's about 20 bucks for a tranny filter that usually comes with the tranny pan gasket (verify when you buy). Remove the upper half of the tranny dipstick from above (drivers side near back of engine below valve cover there is a bolt to remove) and it will be alot easier to remove the pan itself. remove all the bolts (after draining pan of course) and when you remove the pan be careful cause there will be a little more fluid that will drain out. There's 3 bolts holding the filter, remove them, replace filter and reinstall the pan and upper half of dipstick and your'e done. I believe you will need about 2-3 quarts fluid to replace (measure what got drained).
