Cold Air Intake

OK, I finally got on the phone with their technitian who told me that he knows nothing. I was asking thether their intake for '92 LS400 would fit on years '90 and '91.
After that I called my local Injen dealer who told me that they can order that intake for $280 but if it does not fit, I would have to pay 30% restocking fee and loose $20 on labour.
I need some kind of reassurance that the intake would fit before I waste my cash. Any ideas?

retrodrive - That retail site I referenced says they will sell the intake for the early LS for about $210 or $220 as I recall. They have a 25% restocking fee but who knows, maybe you could get them to cut you some slack if you explain the story and if it doesn't fit you could send it back for a modest fee. Wish I knew more about the LS and could say it would or wouldn't fit.

Oh lol. Thanks for pointing that out Ron. I was actually looking at the wrong price on that site ($290).
I pulled out my part finder program and compared years 1992 to 1991. The intake part numbers are identical so I am sure I will be able to put it on. Hopefully they did not change anything inside the engine compartment as far as location goes.
Check this out:
This is LS400 1991 stock intake system:
This is LS400 1992 intake system:
Ever played that game where you have two pics and have to find a defined number of differences between them?

retrodrive - Wish I knew more about the LS but like I said, I have just currently started to look at possibly getting one. I guess you might have to really compare the numbers but it sure looks like the important bits, the ducting and the air cleaner box, all look the same. Vendors can get very hesitant to approve a certain part for installation on a certain year without trying it but you have to wonder why Injen didn't say it was good going further back.
cutecboy - I have very little trouble with most mods people do to make their cars more individual. If someone wants more chrome, it may not be my cup of tea, but then who says it has to please me. I have just found over the years that guys that take pride in their cars and do some modding are pretty decent people. If I want five more hp and it costs $200, why not? While the GS4 has good room, decent handling after modding, quietness, and great build quality, 300hp can put a smile on your face just going to the mailbox.

Don't know how the LS system is going to be done but all the GS intakes wind up with the filter at the end of the pipe roughly where the stock filter is. You do not need to take the bumper off. In the intake shoutout Ethan is doing on the GS it looks like the intake itself is changed over quite quickly, probably less than half an hour. Probably gets more complicated if you go for an ECU upgrade.

Sorry, I guess what you are referring to as a cold air intake is actually a hybrid between a replacement intake and some sort of ram air setup which will attempt to get air from some source other than the engine compartment. However, if you look at what we have been talking about, the Injen intake, it is clearly not what you are referring to as a cold air intake and the one I thought rsj was asking about for installation. I still would be very surprised if the Injen intake required the front bumper to be removed unless you have experience specifically with this intake and its mounting on the LS. Some of the aftermarket intakes do have an optional cold air box which is meant to surround the cone filter and find a source of colder air but, once again, I don't beleive the Injen either comes with this setup or offer it as an option.

Actually any intake system (not just filter) can be cold air if they come with the cold air box. The one that goes under the bumper is just one of the forms of cold air intakes.
