If I were you I would get a tan belt from a wrecked 98-00 as cheaply as possible and do a test fit. If it works then buy the newer belt and problem solved. I realize that they have different part numbers but that could simply reflect a very minor cosmetic change. The guy at the dealer will never tell you they are compatible because unless he has tried it or has vast experience with your car he likely has no idea. He has to stick with the part numbers. I personally don't like gray leather nearly as much as tan and an interior swap around an new seatbelt is absurd. It doesn't seem like this problem is insurmountable it will just take a little work.

I ran across this problem to!! If the seat belt works ok? Find a upostery shop or a aviation upostrey shop that has the seat webbing. I just had mine done on my 94 for 40 bucks a side.

To rehash an old topic.
I just repaired my driverside 92 ls400 from serious fraying. I salvaged a rear seatbelt and took the webbing from it and replaced the bad webbing, even found the OAk/ tan color. Biggest issue was getting the webbing to fit thru upper slide anchor point. I had to use a xacto blade to shave material from gap. All-in-all, it took 2 hours, now I have a nice belt again.
