Hey there guys! I just recently brought a 1993 LS400 with a couple of problems. The car itself runs great, but the only problem I am currently having is with the Speedometer/odometer and the lighting. Like I was told, I got the 3 capacitors Micro Soldered and then went to plug it in and it still dose not light up the whole dash. The only thing it does now is that the needles have light and I do not have to wait for the car to warm up for them to come on. Im very puzzled right now and not completely sure on what to do. If anyone could help me out or give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Also I brought the car not knowing the exact KMS but was told that he was being honest and has only driven around 190. Im really thankful for any replies and sorry for my English, its not my first language.

Sounds like the CCFL driver circuit is not functioning. It may be caused by the failed driver or the power supply circuit for the driver is failed. If I were you, I'd simply check other electrolytic capacitors using an ESR meter and replace failed ones. Aged electrolytic capacitors reduce the capacitance as well as to increase the ESR and the high ESR capacitors degrade the function of the power circuit. The ESR can be mostly checked without removing capacitors from the board. Simply attach test leads to each capacitor and read the ESR value. Generally speaking, the ESR should be less than a few hundred mΩ. If an ESR meter is not available quickly, the simplest way to try would be to replace all the electrolytic capacitors. They are aged 27 years old and about to fail, you know.

We all know current worldwide shortage with electronics & components for automotive industry, means it's not easy (as today - year 2022) to find them.

I would like to repair my 93 LS400 cluster. Only recommended capacitor, I found available to order, is from Mouser:

Hey Guys. Great info here but I dont feel comfortable enough to try this myself on my 1994 LS. any recommendations on where to send it to be repaired? Thanks for all the info here. Great stuff

It worked! I actually did it! Thought I failed when I lifted the pad but it was still attached to tthe trace. This is my first capacitor and soldering experience. My dad got me a little training kit to try soldering, its a little harder than it looks! FYI dont pull at all when its hot enough its just slips off.

Thanks so much for the tutorials. I saved at least $300.

Thing is now I know I got a trouble code 41, so off to trying to diagnose and repair that... anybody loving these first gen LS400 in Austin Tx??????????? I have alot of minor things I would love help doing.
