Based on what I have read here, it most likely was a leak at the rear main seal. I used to listen to a radio program called car talk. I do remember the guy (cert mechanic) saying something against switching higher mileage car (above 60K miles) to a full synthetic fluid. Full synth fluids have different properties than regular Dino oils and it was advised that if you START a car out running on full synth fluids than keep it that way for it's lifetime. If your car has been running the dino stuff and you want to switch, it would not be advisable to go any more than a synthetic blend as opposed to full synth. Think of it as the same principle as NOT doing a FULL flush on the tranny of an older car; as it could cause more problems and needed repairs. Pretty much the same principle with oil and the seals. Synthetic blend should slow/stop the leak provided that your seals haven't deteriorated too badly.
