Bought 96LS 400 with 226k, previous owner had the car for 10 years, said he replaced timing belt and water pump 5 years ago.

Average miles per year say 12K miles x 5 years = 60K miles... You have another 30K miles to go... It wouldn't hurt to replace now tho. While you are in there, might as well replace everything else.. All the seals, water pump, thermostat .... Good luck buddy.

I have been chaning my timinb belt every 120,000 miles and so far no problems but that is taking a small chance but my car runs 40-50 k per year and i change everything in side all seals wp crank seal all idlers when i do change the timing belt it still looks but the wate pump is just getting tired also replade the fan shaft bearing every 200k my lexus is a 1991 with 249,000 miles same radiator all hoses are original, lexus builds a great car same a/c just changed out the alternator it was still good just didn't want to have it go out. There is a guy in san diego with over a million miles on a 90 lexus on the same motor
