Thumbs up 97 LS 400 Timing Belt Replaced at 152k

All,

Just completed timing belt, water pump, and all ignition replaced on my LS 400 with 152K miles on original timing belt, water pump, etc.. Amazingly the old belt had only minor cracking! Yes, I had been inspecting it for the last few years, and finally did the job. Honestly I thought it was a very easy job, once you found all of the "hidden" bolt heads!!!

What a great way to save huge service bucks!

I'm not amazed. Timing belts on Lexus cars rarely break but are instead trashed (like mine was) when another part in the system fails. I hope you changed all the auxiliary parts (idlers, water pump, etc.) because the failure of one of those are what causes timing belt failure.

yes, all replaced with OEM, included new tensioner, water pump, every o-ring along the way, radiator hoses, all the ignition except for the coils.

I also had a power steering pump leak, so replaced the o-ring on the reservoir and put a bolt in that IAC Valve port. I think the O-ring was my leak as it was very"D shaped".

It started right up and ran much quieter. The only thing I have NOT replaced is the fan belt idler pulley, and I am thinking I should do that too.

Jim: Are you saying that if one changes the other parts related to the timing belt and skip the timing belt if it looks good is OK; you should get a lot more miles from it? I can see
changing the aux items becuae they appear easier, and passing on the belt. All that lining up the marks and other steps on the belt may be more than I would want to attempt. MOre of your comments on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

No that's not what he's saying. He's saying they don't usually break on their own. If the tensioner goes or the water pump seizes up, or something like that then the belt will go. If you have it off put a new one in. You will have it off b/c to get all the other stuff out, the belt comes off first. Lining up the marks isn't hard, you just have to follow all the directions you are reading about. If you can read, you can do it.

Could you post the part No of all the OEM parts that you put in?
That would be very helpful.
Thanks

Awesome right up - thanks for the part numbers. I never did the job myself. I am coming up on my 3rd belt change soon. Even though they last well beyond 100k miles I feel better sticking by the published interval

Thanks! I have a spare truck, so my wife could drive the truck and therefore I wasn't pressured to do the job over a weekend.

I really enjoyed doing it....my wife thinks I am sick!
