What motor oil should I use??
I got a 97 ls400 with 183,000 miles on it. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and its getting time to have it serviced. Does anyone have any suggestions on which motor oil and filter I should use???

The Age Old Question, Which Oil & Filter???
Ahem,
I've used search for the last three days and I'm still not sure what would be the best choice.
Immediately after purchasing my 1991 LS400 (130k miles) I went to the nearest Toyota dealership and picked up an oil filter I took the advice from www.lexls.com and got ( part #90915-YZZD3). I next went to O’Reilly’s and bought 6 qts. of Castrol Syntec 5w-30. (This was my Dad’s suggestion; he has been driving Toyotas since the 70’s and has been driving Lexus since 1990.)
Well, I discovered this site a few days ago and I have yet to find one person that recommends this same combination. I am now more confused than ever.
With synthetic oil do I need a synthetic filter?
If so, which oil and filter combo is best?
Is there a difference between Castrol Syntec & Mobil 1 Full Synthetic?
Should I go with AMSOIL over everything else? Where can I get AMSOIL in Oklahoma?
Who makes a synthetic filter, and can I get one from AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, or Walmart?
What is the best TOYOTA made filter for my 91 LS400?
I’m sure these are SUPER NooB questions; but I’ve already fallen in love with the car and want to keep it running perfectly for as long as possible.
Thanks in advance.

What type of Oil should I use?
I purchased a 95 LS 400 with 70K miles on it in February from the original owner. The vehicle has been maintained by the dealer to factory specs since it was driven off the lot. I have noticed through reading these forums that some are using synthetic oil. I don't have a warranty so there is no issue there. What type/brand of oil do you use? If there is already a post on this, I couldn't find it, please point me in that direction. THANKS FOR A GREAT SITE!!

Here are a couple tips on searching...
(1) Try using the advanced search function and
(2) Uncheck the box where it says "Also search in child forums"

I'm usisng Royal Purple 5W30 in my 92'LS. All my other cars using same but different weight.
I switched to synthetic at 70K. No problem what so ever. Engine is lot les noisy. My daughter using Royal Purple in her 02' IS 300 also.

got my "93 with 88k on it. have used mobil one ever since. getting close to 200k now.
had one incident where car started up to drive it out of garage for garage sale. moved it fifty feet, then parked it for 8 hrs. when started up, there was a puff of smoke. mechanic told me that was probably a valve sleeve, which did not warrant the expense of fixing. he suggested i switch from 5/30 to 10/30. that did the trick.
another reason to use synthetic is it flows like water when it is zero degrees. puts a lot less stress on the electrical system when starting in the cold. it also come real close to never breaking down. you really only change it to remove the dirt in the oil.

Thanks for the info. By browsing those posts, I worked my way to the amsoil site. I was reading about switching to synthetic, but there is a warning in there about switching after 10 years of regular oil. I'm not sure what type has been used in my car (95). Anyone have trouble with leaks or problems after switching to synthetics? Should I be concerned?
Thanks in advance

What type of oil did the original owner use? Documented anywhere? I would continue to use the same oil the engine has adjusted to...
As for what type of oil to use..., We all agree it should be NEW oil...

When changing my oil a while back, I over tightened the oil filter which caused the seal to crack. Had the oil leak out while driving on a trip. The dealer that fixed it replaced the synthetic Mobil 1 with conventional. I noticed it hesitated a lot more when starting on cold mornings. Switched back and it starts like a champ again.

Enginer Oil Recommendations
Recently purchased '90 LS 400 w/100K. Owner was friend of mine, bought it new and recorded every oil change etc.
Typically I have used Valvoline or Castrol in my vehicles with high mileage.
Does anyone have a recommendation of oil to use, or does it make any difference?
Looks as if the previous owner used Castol and Valvoline as well.
Is there any thought to using STP oil treatment with these engines with high miles?
You input is appreciated.
