Default 91 LS 400, No Reverse but I have Drive

91 LS 400 w/210K the car had been sitting for a long time (4 months) started the car up to go to the gas station, It was fine without any weird noises. then after refueling the tank. the trans would slip terribly in drive. pulled of the road and now will not move at all in reverse. It just revs up without moving. It moves better in drive, had it towed to a shop and they said it needs a trans. I asked them if it was the fluid level and they said it was definitely the trans. Would the trans go bad this quickly?? Help.

New Transmission?! I don't see that going bad. I'd think it would be a belt or something. The shop wants to make $. Do you have a friend who is a mechanic? I'd try to get an unbiased opinion

As far as I know it is the original trans

could be wrong fluid (commonly happens at non-toyolex mechanics) or a dead trans OR a dead torque converter

For the cost of a paper clip pull the diagnostic codes to see if there is anything flagged.

http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/intro/codereading.html

Also for the sake of $20-40 flush the transmission and refill with Toyota TIV fluid.

Check the trunk hinge wiring harness gives some strange faults.

If that doesn't work then think transmission replacement.

after mine sat I had a leak in my cooler lines and I would find I was getting a very bad slip as it got low and would also take a long time to gat into and between gears.

ps. if the lines are bad I found that they are standard 3/8" brake lin and you can get them in lengths at any local parts store for cheap and they tread right in.

Was the slipping only in a particular gear or overall?

this is only true for the cooler (and potentially, the return) lines. the main feed from the pump to the rack is a high pressure hydraulic hose, and needs to be crimped together properly by a shop with hosemaking equipment.

you mean like a CVT?, I am pretty sure it is a conventional torque converter.
