Default OEM or aftermarket PS hose ok?

My 1998 has been leaking power steering fluid for a while. I've been in denial almost as long but it's gotten worse. I had the mechanic look at it -- an obvious failure in the high pressure power steering hose.

I've replaced a fair number of things on this car considering it only has 90K miles on it. Everything (except the wheels) is OE even though I'm not against aftermarket. Heck, I'm in the wheel business, company sells aftermarket all day long so I understand the good and the bad of it.

I am still experiencing sticker shock from the price of the hose. Since I've brought my mechanic parts at half of what he found them for before, he thought it best to leave it up to me work my magic again. There is no magic for this hose. I've found $373+ for OE and $170 for aftermarket.

Anyone have experiences to share?

The last thing non-OE on this car didn't go well so I'm not as anxious to try it again without some feedback.

if you're sure that it's just the high pressure hose then you can pull the old hose and take it to ANY normal hydraulic hose shop and they can make you a new one or rebuild your old one for <$100. going price here in SoCal is about $60-70 for a rebuild.

remember, you need a HYDRAULIC hose shop...

Thanks for the input. I decided it was worth trying the Autozone hose. Since the hose is special order, I pulled out my card to order it and got this message:

For Your 1998 Lexus LS400 4.0L SFI DOHC 8cyl
Duralast/Power Steering Pressure Line Hose
Part Number: 92183 $100.99
Availability: Ships within 3-5 business days.

Sorry, the requested quantity for this special order item is not available. Please adjust the quantity.

I'll keep looking, I'm sure I can find it now that I'm headed in the right direction

Thank you again!

Check rockauto.com . The two hoses they have listed are at ~40$ and ~64$, and there's 5% coupon's that are easy to find. I've picked up quite a few parts from them so far.

I've bought an aftermarket hose before and it didn't fit properly on a 1994, so I had to get OEM.

Default Aftermarket ok, but a tough job to replace

Had an aftermarket one on for about a year now, no problems...
The actual replacement job was no fun though, both ends are in very difficult to access areas, actually had to pull the PS pump to get that end tight enough to not leak.

Ordered from rockauto. I looked through the list to see what else I could put on the car but came up with nothing but a cabin filter.

I'll be sure not to mention that it's a pain to put on to the mechanic, he says that anyway. Is there anything on this car that has been easy? I saw them doing the starter, that was a lot of fun too.

Rockauto was a bust. i appreciate that they called and emailed me the day after the order, but they don't have the hose either. The hydraulic hose guy, supposed the best in the whole area according to two different forklift vendors, doesn't want to touch it. I'll just buy the OE and get on with it. Thanks for all of the advice

Either after market or hydraulic out fit is great. Remember hydraulic shops make hoses for industrial and heavy equipment daily. And are some of the best hoses that money can buy. Over priced OEM is a waste of $, and besides if they were all that great they should last way longer than they do.
