you may have a faulty gauge if it is starting off in the middle to begin with. do you have antifreeze flowing through your top hose when car gets warm? Have you replaced the thermostat? what have you done already?

i had the same mishalf once...changed everything except the waterpump. and then out of nowhere i found a small hairline crack on the water outlet...the one you take off to replace the thermostat. my brother had the same problem with his car so i guess its common on ls400 if you havent changed the oem... you can easily find one at autozone for replacement.

The light you're talking about that comes on, is it right side under speedo? (next to the ABS light) If so it's the low coolant light. I would have to agree with shawnlexus and say the gauge is faulty. (why would it start at half way)
I asked this to someone else also, does the engine actually get hot and overheat or is it just the gauge goes all the way to hot?
