Whining sound from front of engine??
Hey folks
I suddently got this whining sound from front of the engine. i cant locate it exsactly but it sounds almost like theres not enough oil in the power steering. But there is plenty and the sounds doesnt come from the pump.
it follows the rpms.
yesterday i tried to take of the belt and started up the engine. the sound was gone.
could this be the waterpump on its way out? :-/

Rollaboy - I think it's the PS
I noticed this very recently on my 92 as well. I think it is something to do with the PS system. Mine varies with the rpm as well. Additionally, when I'm turning in to a parking spot while making a low speed (under 5 mph) 90 degree turn, there is a labored sound the more I turn the steering wheel. I haven't had a chance to get mine checked out yet, but it's definitely a concern for me right now. Please keep us posted as to what you find.

Licelsior, i took of the serpentine belt and the sound disappeared, so it could'nt be the trans pump then right?
I can exactly say where the sound is coming from. Dont know if its the ps pump.
But i bought a rebuild power steering rack a week ago so maybe it has something to do with that. I also think i can feel a bit humming feeling in the steering while turning. I dont think the power steering operates 100% the same way as before but its hard to explain.
I filled with some swiss power steering fluid. should be great quality and is says Toyota T-IV comparible on the bottle so should be no problem?

if u look at ur fan clutch, the fan bracket is behind it. its a little annoying to remove it since u have remove the timing covers and etc.
take a video of it and try to get a mechanics stethoscope to listen to it.

T-IV for the PS= NO
Power steering needs "normal" dexron/mercon spec transmission fluid.

Hmm okay so that might be the problem. I thought the transmission and power steering fluid was the same :-/
I'm gonna flush the power steering and fill with dexron III instead. Hope that works.

Does putting type IV into the PS instead of using type III really cause a whining noise? or is there even a big difference between using one or the other in the PS?
