The ECT is Engine Coolant Temp sensor. This one from Advanced Auto for $16 is good enough, or you can waste your money on the Beck/Arnley for $42. Alot of people get the $20 one from Autozone. (including me) If the guy from Advanced didn't know what it was just by saying ECT then he should not be working with auto parts.
The ECT, which is the main sensor, sends a signal to the ECU for fuel delivery. You'll get better mileage also.

i was thinking the exact same thing! thanks a lot. i'll get one asap. i have noticed a change in my gas consumption lately.

okay, i got the part today (ECTS), but there's no haynes manual for the year lexus i have. anyone know where this thing goes and does anyone know if chilton makes a manual for this model?

Chilton and Haynes don't have a manual for the LS400, you would need to find a dealer service manual. (best investment I made) You can get them for close to $200 on Ebay or if you search around.
