Help with Audio
hey guys, i just purchased my first lexus, a black on black 95 ls400. i am extremely happy with the car. the only problems are that when my fm is on, it is very static-y, and gets bad reception. i dont know if this is a common problem with a wire or antenna, or what. also, i have trouble with the stock nakamichi cd player, and often get an err 21 displayed. i dont know if this is common as well, and if it would be worth to have it fixed by nakamichi or cheaper to replace with an aftermarket headunit. any suggestions? thanks.

creSSwell,
First be sure that the wire from your head unit to your antenna is actually hooked up. I would check back at the antenna first which is the easiest place for it to become disconnected. Then check at behind the head unit. You might also buy a new antenna cable and run it inside the car from the headunit to the antenna and see if that fixes the reception. The wire may also be corroded although this is much less likely unless your car was in a flood.
The CD players frequently die especially after 16 years. It is not worth fixing but you can easily pick up another used CD changer on eBay. An aftermarket system will definitely sound better but the investment in time and money will also be greater. I love high end car audio and thus for me the time and expense are well worth it. You need to decide how much you are willing to invest.
Good luck!

Luis I will try that with the antenna. And I am willing to upgrade to an aftermarket unit, I have my 96 impala fitted with audio upgrades. Will the cd changer in the glove box complicate just a simple installation of a headunit, and are there certain brands the nakamichi wiring set up is compatible with? Thanks

If you go aftermarket then leave the original wiring where it is and install completely new wiring for everything. Don't try to mix aftermarket with OEM it is not worth the effort and the results will likely be substandard.
I am not sure what the error code means (you can probably do a search on the internet) but most likely it is something in the changer itself. The headunit doesn't break as easily.
