Default Purchase Advice sought

I found a 98 LS for sale for 6300. It has 150000 miles and looks clean. It has had the PS pump replace, timing belt done, all maint records. The owner wrote the following and it kind if scares me because the CEL is on. What are your thoughts? Is it a good price for the car? Should I stay away? What would the repair really cost?

the check engine light is not emissions related…. it is for the transmission.
the OBD II code is "P0763 Shift Solenoid C"…. which is defined as "Sensor either open or closed".
according to the dealer, this repair would be 2 to 2.5 hrs of labor, plus the cost of the part (i think a OEM part was $250 and a non-OEM part was $110). if my notes are correct, the part number is 35230-30010.

overpriced for having a CEL, esp. since it's due for a timing belt service at 180k (provided it was done ~90k like it's supposed to)

If the car looks good, drives good, and has a clean CARFAX, make an offer contingent on a mechanical inspection and repair of the transmission issue at a dealer- at the sellers expense. If the seller balks, and I think he will, walk away.

The timing belt was done at 123k. It also has new tires, a new set of snow tires, and brakes done. New pads and rotors. Thanks for all the advice guys. I appreciate it.

I agree, make a contingent that you will pay asking price for it as long as it checks out with inspection by Lexus dealership. I think demanding seller to pay for repairs will lose a deal for you. I think 65 is a fair price if the car, if it is in good condition and other than the listed cell nothing else is wrong. GL

Thanks for all the replies guys. I spoke with him today and he is willing to go down to $5400 with a set of mounted snow tires on the regular aluminum Lexus wheels, in addition to the all seasons that are already on the car. It also has had a recent brake job in addition to the other stuff. Still on the fence, but, the $5400 sounds good.
