Dealer quoted me $1450 for timing belt service with waterpump, serpentine, and full tune up. Is that about the right price for a dealer? I really need to find a good independent Lexus mechanic.

The only other little surprise that came on today was a check engine light and I went by pep boys to check it and it turns out the code is P0420 the notorious exhaust leak code. I'm going to go to an exhaust shop to get that verified I just hope it's not the catalytic converters. I'm sure the previous owner turned the code off to sell it. But hey, there is always something...
Not a bad price for the timing belt. I've done two of those during the time I've had my car and usually have it done by Toyota at a cost of 1200. If you can DIY, that's great as the parts aren't that expensive. Given that you just spent 8K to get the car, I'd be inclined to protect the investment and get it done sooner rather than later.

Pep Boys quoted me $480.00 for labor for everything. I would be hesitant except I have used this Pep Boys for the last 6 years for minor repairs, oil changes / tires ect., and they have yet to fail me. They also have a lt of older seasoned mechanics and not just young punks. I would rather go with a cooperate giant then a small independent shop. After taking the engine cover off and looking at the mess I honesty lost interest in doing it myself...

Probably going to wait about 6 months and order all the parts and have them do it. I'll bring them the directions from this site as well. At least I know they stand behind their work. Should be less then a grand if I order all the parts myself.

Very nice car. Don't let Pep Boys touch your LS.

I know I know... But I have no idea where else to go. This is not the U.S. you know. The local shops are even more sketchy. Maybe I can get a quote on labor alone from the dealer and save some money by buying the parts myself.

if the lexus dealer is ridiculously priced try going to a local toyota dealership.

or searching online for a reputable independent.

99 LS400 67,700 miles

Well I received a quote for $991.89 for labor and coolant from the dealer. Don't know why they included coolant when I asked for labor alone. I think I am going to with the dealer as I have found no one else I trust.

Anyway,

Can you help me put together the complete list of parts I need. I tried searching but was not able to find it.

Timing kit which includes: TKT021
AISIN Water Pump
Koyo Idler Bearing
Koyo Tensioner Bearing
Mitsuboshi Timing Belt
Water Pump Gaskets & O-Rings
Hydrolic tensioner

Also getting:
Thermostat
Serpentine belt
8 NGK iridium spark plugs

What else am I missing?

It looks like the differential fluid has never been changed. What is the interval on the differential and is there anything special I need to know regarding this? I am going to do the fuel filter as well as I don't believed it was ever changed. Transmission was done at 55,000 so I should be good there.

That price isn't out of line. Whenever they remove a component that runs coolant through it, they replace with fresh. This saves you having to do the drill again anyway.

Differential fluid is 60K intervals.

The fuel filter, my mechanic has relayed that unless the car was overseas and driven in a country with particularly dirty gas, a car stateside will not need this change interval.

Your plugs are likely still good. With a properly running LS, I've not noticed anything but very minimal increments between plug changes. These could probably go 100K miles. The cost isn't high so your call.

I'm jealous. Looks nice. I wish I could move up to a newer LS with less miles.

dang, you stole that if it was only $8,000

you can get the complete set of real genuine Lexus parts for the timing belt job on ebay for around $200 + shipping

search on TKT-021 or TKT-001 (with or without hydraulic tensioner)

kit Includes: AISIN Water Pump, KOYO Idler Bearing, KOYO Tensioner Bearing, NTN Hydraulic Tensioner, Mitsuboshi Timing Belt, and the appropriate gaskets and seals

Yeah, I'm either going to use eBay or RockAuto. $9,500 was the original asking price. She has a couple of little dings around her and needs some love here and there. Honestly, the KBB value of $13,968 I don't think is realistic or reflecting true market value, at least here in PR. There is another 99 I test drove with 91k in good shape too $8500 that is still for sale.
