Default 1996 LS400 Preventive Maintenance Questions

Hi!

I purchased a '96 LS400 back in July 2011 with 180,000 miles on it. My first Lexus. Since then, I put on another 10,000 miles. In the last few months, I have had the timing belt (preventive) and water pump (it broke down) replaced, and pretty soon going to replace the front struts (makes a "tock" sound when going over a speed-bump at high speed). The car does not have any leak of any kind, but it vibrates a little accelerating from 25 MPH to 40~50 MPH. My mechanic tells me that it could be the motor-mount, but we have not looked at it in details. Acceleration is great for a car of this age.

I like driving the car as a daily commuter and wondering what type of preventive maintenance I should do to keep it for another 50,000 miles. Thanks.

Welcome and congrats on the LS!

The usual regular maintenance stuff is the way to keep the car happy and that is all the fluids. PS, tranny, differential, oil and coolant. There are other threads on items that need to be replaced in the suspension and tops are the strut bar bushings and tranny mount.

I would check all gaskets, seals, belts and hoses. If you cannot see the printed writing on any of the belts or hoses or if they look/feel brittle or hard I would replace them. Check the head gasket and valve cover gaskets for leaks. I would also check/change all the fluids (engine oil, tranns fluid, brake fluid, ect).

yes, I also have a 96 LS - I would change the following:

power steering fluid
coolant
transmission fluid
differential fluid
brake fluid

the first three are critical!

also, I would recommend replacing the following

distributor caps & rotors
plugs
plug wires
Engine Control Temperature Sensor
O2 sensors (upstream only)
brake pads if not done recently
vacuum hoses
heater hoses and other similar small water hoses
serpentine belt
transmission mount
fuel filter
air filter

also I would clean the throttle body butterfly with that CRC throttle body cleaner as well as the MAF sensor with the CRC MAF cleaner

and get ready, there is likely an Idle Air Control Valve and front upper control arms in your future!
