I guess it comes down to the miles between the two and price.

What PD said is true, i owned a 97 for a bit and it had power steering problems. after that got totaled i got a 99, WORLD of difference. i would say go for newer in my experience. i love how the headlights actually work, and how they deleted the antenna, and i do love the wood grain steering wheel even though some don't. also, i feel a bit safer with the traction control that the 99 has compared to the 97. when i first got into my 99, it felt like a completely different car imo. still had the looks/quality i loved, but it also had sooo much more. i would say go with the 98+. 0

Lots of interesting info here. Now I want a newer LS. :-(

Can anyone speak to reliability over the different years? What about repair costs?

labor and parts costs are roughly the same.

reliability generally got better the newer the LS.

much more power/acceleration and better safety features such as skid control and side airbags and better theft deterrent system

one reason a '98 has considerably more power is that they FINALLY got rid of the silly distributor caps, rotors and plug wires!

it also has the variable valve timing that Honda pioneered

'97 has a similar immobilizer and side-airbag arrangement as the '98-00 cars.

no, the ignition system alone doesn't make nearly that much improvement. the computer was totally changed for the VVT-i and that is what yielded the majority of the gain.

honda did not pioneer VVT-type systems, they had VTEC. VTEC has changeable life/duration, VVT-i is variable timing only. The VVT-i system in the '98+ cars is responsible for the bulk of the hp/tq and responsiveness increases.

VVT-type systems have been around in some form for the better parts of the past 50 years.

more horsepower and definitely a newer looking interior with more cabin space. I love the smooth as butter steering that allows you to parallel park with a pinky!!

yeah, but he asked the difference between a 91 and a 98, NOT the difference between a 97 and a 98 - hence my original answer!

and coil on plug is definitely a performance as well as reliability improvement!

they switched to coil on plug because with the VVTi mechanism in the cam gear they couldn't use them for the distributors anymore...

the benefit of COP ignition on a non-FI engine at normal RPM is negligible.

well...... let me use common words for you... my first LS was a 91... after all the lincolns and cadillacs I had, I thought I had died and went to heaven when I got in that 91 LS.... as the years & LS's (11 of them) went by, I found out I hadn't died, but had just come in out of the rain...... Now in my 99, I have that old feeling again, just looking for angels.....
PS: you will love one...

ditto! haha good info here. i've read the differences and this thread just brings it all to life.

i'm frustrated my 97 didn't come with seat warmers and traction control. was this standard in 98-up?

VSC/trac was.
seat warmers were an option.

VVT-i is very different from older VVT/vtec systems in that it's a progressive engagement in timing advancement.
