Exhaust leak 1995 LS 400
#3
exhaust manifold and/or gasket or cracked EGR piping would be good first suspects, I would take it to any muffler shop and they will throw it up on the lift and find the leak and show you where it is, if it is in the exhaust system (downstream from the manifold mentioned above) - manifold leaks often exhibit themselves as a ticking noise that can sound like a valve tapping in your old chevy 350
replacing a cracked exhaust manifold or installing a gasket for it is a bit of a pain, most everything else in the exhaust system is fairly easy to fix if you have an oxy/acetylene torch and can weld with it. - It could even be something as simple as a hole in a muffler or in a cat.

(I have a exhaust noise in the area...if it proves to be the EGR pipe I would like to try to do it myself, but some of the writups I have come across show it to be a major PITA.)
Please share...thanks!

I like Billy's method of just removing the passenger side cat
PS - the Lexus part numbers (for most years) are:
25601-50060 - EGR lower pipe $113.75 (wholesale mechanic's price)
25628-50010 - EGR upper gasket
25634-50010 - EGR lower gasket
