Default Air conditioning 1991 LS400

Hi friends, just curious about something I've been told in the past. My a/c compressor has gone out and I've heard that you have to change the condenser and evaporator and hoses when this happens due to small fragments of metal entering the system. Is this true or would I be ok to just replace my compressor ?
Thanks in advance, Bradley.

Assuming the compressor threw a significant amount of metal debris downstream (they usually don't) my experience has been to simply undo the lines at the condenser and the compressor, and the receiver/dryer. The dryer actually acts as the system debris filter, so it has to be changed. Blow compressed air through the condenser, and each section of hose leading to the compressor. It actually helps if you can blow some compressor oil through the lines with the compressed air; it helps scavenge any debris along the way. Install the new compressor AND a new receiver/dryer. Lubricate all O-rings and tighten everything up. Vacuum the system down to 31 in., confirm it holds, then recharge with proper amount of compressor oil and freon. (Or have a shop do it).

I think the best answer is "it depends". If the compressor was totally grenaded then you may have to replace or flush everything. If you replaced your compressor because it was making a little noise but still fuctioning, you may be able to just replace it. I would always replace the drier because it's cheap and easy to do.

Last year my compressor was making a whine but otherwise functioning. I bought a used one for $50, swapped it out along with a new drier and now it blows ice cold---knock on wood. A local shop wanted $1200 plus to r/r a rebuilt unit.
