Default Excessive condensation from exhaust (solved)

1992 LS 400
137,000 miles

Fresh oil change

I had the resonator removed from my exhaust. The one that is in the single exhaust part. It was badly dented and smashed in from the previous owner. The next morning when I started the car it was pouring out white exhaust. a few days later I started it during the day and same the same thing happened. I had my brother rev the engine after it ran for about a minute and water was shooting out the back and made 2 water puddles on the driveway.

I noticed that the new straight exhaust pipe that the welded in where the resonator is not straight. It forms a V. It is low at the weld closest to the rear of the car. Could condensation be pooling in the low V and causing the problem?

The coolant level has not changed and there is no signs of water in the oil. The oil cap is also clean. ( no gunk build-up from steam trying to escape)

After about 2 minutes the white smoke (steam) clears up and does not reappear unless the engine is cool.

I am having the coolant tested for exhaust gases.

I am thinking about having the muffler shop cut the straight pipe back off and starting the engine in the morning to see if it produces the same white exhaust.

Thoughts?

i too get heavy condensation but i see this as a normal occurrence. i get puddles even after driving. i wouldn't be too concerned with water pooling inside the exhaust, unless the pipe the exhaust shop used is some shabby metal prone to rusting.

It only started AFTER the resonator was removed. It was fine until then. I am just puzzled as to why it happened the next morning after the resonator was removed

because the baffles in the resonator would capture some of the condensation...

I had the rack and pinion changed a few weeks ago. I noticed the pump was whining. I checked the level and added fluid. A week later, and tons of white smoke at start up , the power steering fluid was almost empty. I thought air was being purged and the fluid was filing the hoses.

I read the power steering bible thread and discovered the air check valve was bad and power steering fluid was being sucked into the intake. I disconnected the hose at the intake, plugged the hose and capped the vacuum at the intake. No more smoke.

I'll order a new valve from Sewell using my discount and change it out.

I think its normal. Mine has done that first thing and if i rev it up it really spits out.

I ordered that valve awhile back but never got to use it. My rack went bad and had whole thing replaced and it included pump and value so now i have a back up i guess.

White smoke out of the exhaust, on these cars, almost always points to PS fluid being burned off out of the exhaust. Is your power steering leaking?? It gets sucked into the intake and burned out of the exhaust. Normally does go away after a few minutes.
