I'm sorry j2b4o but there is absolutely no way you were averaging 40 mpg in an ls400. Especially, a 1990. Maybe your fuel gauge is not functioning properly but it just is not possible to get this kind of mpg in an ls400. The absolute best you can get in vvti (98-2000) ls400's, which get better mpg, is around 28 - 30 under absolutely perfect conditions and this is not sustainable.
Have you done an Economy run before Lavishevo?

Ok......just got the car back after having the ECU overhauled (new capacitors). Purring like a kitty cat now 
(but no noticeable increase in torque or HP as mentioned by another member).
Also did another economy run with more focus on the filling prior & then refilling after.
First put 41psi in each tyre (235/40/18's) then traveled 74km's after filling her to the brim.
Upon noting the 74km's traveled & then refilling I stuck the fuel nozzle in the car gave it a squeeze & it instantly gushed out all over the car, all over the ground and (most annoyingly) all over my new shoes!!!
That said I managed to squeeze in around 7.5 litres (give or take, considering some of it is on the car, ground & on my shoes lol).
So the break down as follows....
75km's (46.6miles) traveled for 7.5 litres (1.98 gallons) which equals 10L/100km's or 23mpg.
So it seems I did indeed squeeze in less gas upon refill.
I would just like to take this opportunity to apologise to the members of CLub Lexus, the motoring community as a whole & all mighty God himself!

Does your car not have the block of plate a few inches down in the gas inlet pipe?
I dont understand how it could be frothing to the top, unless this feature is oly on 95+.
Also do the pumps in New Zealand not automatically cut off when your tank is full?

The car is factory tuned for 91 octane so has the smaller nozzle to prevent the wrong go go juice being put in & yes does have the cut off but it all happened very quickly, obviously too quick for the pump to react.
