Maybe I'll put a 90degree elbow coming off the throttle body threw the hood. That should get plenty of airflow.

ummmm.......the LS400 gets plenty of airflow in totally stock form

and think about this, if your LS400 really could utilize more air, then in order to keep the ideal stoichiometric air/fuel mixture of 14.7 to 1 - it would also have to use more gas!!

who wants crappy gas mileage? - not me!

The LS, along with many other toyota/lexus of the time, runs pig rich from tha factory, AFRs as low as 10.5-12.5:1 are not uncommon at all.

good airflow and a piggyback fuel controller to lean the mixture out a bit have shown solid improvements, documented repeatedly both on the SC and GS 400s.

another reason I have no use for the small gains that might result from so called "cold air intake" systems, is that the car becomes much louder, and if louder was OK, I wouldn't be driving an LS400 in the first place!

and that's relevant to this topic...how, exactly?

OP- why not modify the existing airbox+snorkel to try and get a little more flow out of it?

I think the point that he may have been trying to have come across is this. When you add those cold air intake kits and cone filters to a car, you get that sound of the air rushing into the filter and engine when on the throttle. This in turn make the car sound more aggressive. And in the mind of the buyer of said kit, they relate the aggressive sound to the car making more power. Which, as stated isn't necessarily the case.

Then there is the fact that most ECU's will adapt to the changes after a few miles/hrs of driving. So if there was a small gain in any way shape or form, the ECU will turn around and compensate for it and try to keep the AFR's within the stock parameters.

As for the OEM setup, it really couldn't get any better if you really stop and think about it. As stated before, it is already a cold air setup. It could almost be consider a semi ram air. With the placement of the inlet right in the front of the car, the air is literally forced in when driving. As for the rest of the intake system, Lexus has provided what, 18-20" of intake tubing from the filter to the TB? All hard plastic and smooth bore accept the one flex tube after the MAF. The only gain in the factory system I could see would be replacing the filter element with a less dense/higher flowing element and replacing the flex boot with a smooth silicone boot.

But, in the end some people just want the

My opinion is base on viewing of my 94 & 95 chassis. I realize that the vvti setups are a bit different.

I think everybody has proven the point that the stock setup is just about as good as it gets. Maybe I'll just hold off until I go FI later down the road.
