98 ls400 shifter problem/ possible shift issue
well i have a 98 ls400 with 217K miles. During those miles someone spilled a coke can into the trans shifter on the center console. I cleaned the shifter and surrounding trims because they were sticky but now iam having issue with this transmission.
First of the shift indicator won't light most of the time, so the car does not know which gear it is in. this is a problem when the mirors dont roll down when reversing.
The indicator comes on and goes out randomly on the dash.
The shifter sometimes takes 2 seconds to shift into gears.
I did remove trim and cleaned the shifter and the case it was held in but i saw some metal contacts which i didnt clean and i think that may be the cause of the trouble.
Anyone have this issue or know of it.

It is on the side and mirrors do dip down, but only when the dash indicates it is in reverse. the dash mostly does not light up reverse indicator even though I can reverse the car. Main problem is that dash indicator does not light up properly when I shift between gears.
for example I am shifting from D to low gears and the dash doesn't light up in low mostly. although the car still shifts to low.

ah, there's a sensor in the shifter that tells the dash what gear you're in, and it sounds like that is failing.
EDIT: the auto trans indicator switch is integrated into the park/neutral safety position switch, part no. 84540‑30270.

Toyota calls it a Neutral Start Switch. The location and the price of it can be found at Sewell Lexus.
This may also help you to know inside and the way to fix it easily without removing and opening the inside.
