the job is documented very well here and you can definitely do it yourself with basic hand tools. if you are weary on working on the engine, i would just take it to a professional who's done the job before. i would hate to have some lazy mechanic ruin a cherry car!!!

Thanks, I'll be installing the plug wires and plugs tomorrow so I'll be deeper into the motor to see exactly where the leak is coming from. Is there a rebuild or gasket kit for the power steering pump or will I need to buy a new one? Thanks for all the compliments and info!!!!

installed new plugs and wires today. It was a time consuming job but I just took it slow and went step by step.

Im sure these were the original plugs and wires. You can see 1992 on the plug wires.

Are you going to be doing the timing belt yourself too?
I'm not 100% on that yet. I have seen a few write ups on doing it yourself but haven't looked that deep into it. It really depends on how much $ I could save and how complex the job is.

PS - definitely fix the power steering leak ASAP or you can add an alternator to your parts shopping list
also *definitely* do the caps & rotors, but whenever you are going to do the timing belt, that would be the time because they are right there in the midst of that job
here is a video of a 1st time guy like you, doing an excellent job on renewing the timing belt/water pump/bearings/tensioner on an LS430, which is basically the identical job as doing the LS400

Thanks, I am gonna do some more research on timing belt DIY. That is a great price for all parts needed! Definately doing the power steering pump in the next week or two.

you can save over $1100 easily, the complete kit of all original OEM Lexus parts including AISIN Water Pump, KOYO Idler Bearing, NSK Tensioner Bearing, NTN Hydraulic Tensioner, and Mitsuboshi Timing Belt is available here for $206 with free shipping. - The dealership will charge $1300 -$1800 to replace all of these items, and all are necessary on a car of this age, really. - You have to ask yourself if you are meticulous about attention to detail and following the shop manual procedure to the letter.
