FYI:
I am getting near the end of this project. I have the used transmission up and have replaced a few different seals along the way. Those seals being the oil pump to torque converter seal, and the rear oil seal on the engine. I didn't do the rear most seal on the transmission. It looked fine and if it develops a leak I can do it later. Just working on the final details. I re-gasketed the tranny pan with some FIPG permatex gasket maker. So hopefully I can rap this project up soon.

as a side note. I found the Toyota FIPG to work best with the tranny pan. I used the permatex red and black back to back and both developed leaks. I wish I just bought the Toyota FIPG first would have saved me time and money.

billydpowe, as far as I can tell, you were exactly right about the trouble with the old tranny. The torque converter to pump relationship was broken. The teeth that connect the two were broken and sheared off. Thanks for all the help!
