Size matters! - let's put a BIG oil filter on our LS!

the filtering efficiency % is pretty low on the list of what makes a great filter, the most important factor of all is the design of the silicon anti-drainback valve - this is where the Motorcraft FL-400S beats all other filters (including all Purolators) as it holds ALL of the oil in the filter better than any other design, this gets oil to critical areas faster than any other filter on startup (when 95% of wear occurs). Other premium filters do have a silicon anti-drainback valve, but they are of a different design than this filter.
This is a specific design that was developed to fix some start up knocking in some particular vehicles, this is NOT a clone of one of the Purolator filters, but rather a far more advanced filter design, the bypass system is different as well.
You guys should buy a bunch of filters and cut then open, very interesting and enlightening, and fun!

If only I had a band saw...........

There are a variety of oil filter cutters $20-$100+. A bandsaw would tear the cartridge up in the process and leave metal shavings inside. Not to mention an oily mess. If you happen to have a big tubing cutter, those work if the filter diameter is small enough.

Glad I read this before heading to Walmart for oil and a filter. All they had was Fram, Fram, and Fram. I did find one last hidden Motorcraft FL-400S though. I would have never remembered that without this thread. Gonna do Mobil 1 5W-30 high mileage synthetic as well. Thanks for the info on all these oil filters!

Does anybody use these Denso filters?
I was looking around for reviews on the Denso filters and didn't come across many.

Many thanks to all who have participated in/on this thread!
I've had my '96 LS400 since July '06 when it had 96k on the clock. It has 195k now. I've always had the 5k oc w/Mobil 1 and I don't know what filter my wrench has been using. What I _DO_ know is that he has LS400 clients with 500k on the clock. So I pretty much trust him. Also, he's an independent so I'm not paying stealership rates.
I'm getting ready to do the timing belt etc again, but that's a different thread. My main intention here is to extend my thanks and gratitude to those that have shared their experience here.
Roll On!

my favorite LS400/430 filter at the moment, surprisingly, is the amazingly cheap yet very well made Motorcraft FL-400S, due to its class leading anti-drainback valve which seems to hold the oil in the filter for startup better than any other filter I have seen. - also give a long hard look at the new Fram Ultra XG3600 - it is very impressive on the inside!

Oil filters
If you want to extend your time between oil changes, running a great full synthetic oil such as Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra, Mobil 1, Valvoline SynPower, German Castrol, etc. is not enough, you still have that wimpy little oil filter than doesn't have the capacity to go 12 or 15K miles! - Even if you are very conservative in your oil change frequency and change it every 3000 or 5000, a larger and better made oil filter is never a bad thing!
So here is a list of the most premium oil filters that work great on all LS models from 1990-2006 and give you ~60% more volume as well as premium features on the inside of the filter such as a silicon anti-drainback valve and high quality bypass valve of the same PSI setting as the stock Toyota filter.
here is the list of the world's most premium oil filters, in oversize, which I can expand if I have missed your favorite brand:
Motorcraft --- FL-400S
WIX XP --- 51516XP
Fram Ultra --- XG3600
K&N --- HP-2009
Mobil 1 --- M1-209
Bosch Premium --- D3422
Purolator PureONE --- PL20195
NAPA Platinum --- PFL 41516
Amsoil --- EAO34
Royal Purple --- 20-400
Toyota (NipponDenso) --- 90915-20004 (made in Japan) - this is the filter than came on your car when new, hard to find now
TRD (Toyota Racing Design) --- PTR43-00080 .....Note: this is not an oversize filter
PS - the K&N and Mobil 1 filters are the same filter internally, and with minute differences the Royal Purple and Toyota Racing Design (TRD) are as well, all 4 made on the same assembly line by Fram subsidiary FRAM Filtration (aka Champion) although the filter media on these 4 is not identical.
the Amsoil and NAPA platinum are essentially the same internally as the Wix XP who manufacturers them, although Amsoil is transitioning to Champion (FRAM Filtration) for their manufacturing.

next in my 2000 LS400. By the way, we had a 2005 Mercedes Benz C-class wagon a few
years ago and the oil change interval was 12,000 miles BUT, only if you used the Mercedes
benz factory filter which contained a cotton-like filtering material. It was also as you described
above a little larger than the run of the mill filters. Thanks again.

i Run Mobil 1 full synthetic in everything i own. It is the #1 rated oil in the world. Amsoil use to be the best but Mobil 1 passed them a few years back. LS i usually agree with everything you say. I follow your posts like they are scripture but i have to disagree with you on this one. I personally cant stand fram anything. I have done alot of research on fram and they have had several lawsuits due to their faulty filters.

it really works well if you have the Ultra filter, the Ultra oil, and the LS430 Ultra Luxury package
