some cool things to do with the VIN at the Lexus factory!

you can go here and retrieve the service history

and you can go to the factory's Toyota Information System and reprint the original sticker with options etc. for $15 which will also let you download as much of the factory service manual as you want to! - as well as all technical service bulletins, recalls, campaigns etc.

Default VIN numbers

I hear what your saying LScowboyLS. Ive tried every free VIN checker I can find and their all saying the same thing, VIN invalid. Without the car being here I can't check the windscreen. (I wasn't aware that the VIN is etched into the glass itself, you learn something everyday!!) so i'll have to wait until I get the car home to check that. I'm more interested than anything to get to the bottom of this and find out why my VIN is coming up invalid. It'll be a few weeks before I get the car back but as soon as its back I'll come back to this thread with more info.
Thanks alot for showing interest....

it is not always etched in the glass, that is optional, but it is always visible through the glass on the dash near the windshield, at least in every country I have been to!

required in most countries to be visible through base of windshield from outside of the car

not in center, on one side or the other - driver's side in USA

Default VIN numbers

Just noticed... If you go to www.carpoint.com.au which is the largest online car car sales site in Australia and have a look at all the '97-2000 LS400's (UCF20R).... their VIN numbers ALL start with JT753UF2000 and only the last 6 digits are different.
EG: Some that I looked at are JT753UF2000159783
JT753UF2000153937
JT753UF2000171705
JT753UF2000197269
UCF10R's all have the same VIN except have 1000 instead of 2000 in the middle.
So my VIN JT753UF2000140769 is valid in Australia. Why it comes up as invalid on the VIN checkers is a mystery.
Maybe it's an Australian import VIN maybe.....

because you're using US sites to check them. The US and Canada operate on a different VIN strategy than AUS. North American cars follow FMVSS 115, Part 565, Australian cars follow ADR 61/2, etc... and so forth. The way the vins are coded are quite different.

source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle...classification

For example, plug your vin into an australian specific vin site and it comes up fine: http://www.irego.com.au/free-vin-decoder.php
