CEL code 22 when warm, runs bad, stalls, **FIXED**
94 ls400 with 175,000 miles. Couple of days ago, while driving on freeway, car began to appear to miss-fire/ rough ridding and the Check Engine Light came on. After about 30 seconds, car began to run normal and the Check Engine Light turned off. When we got home, same thing happened while idling with CEL and missing. This happened, while car was running, about 3 or times intermittently over about 3 minutes. When the car began to run rough, there was a strong odor of gasoline with black soot/smoke from tail pipes After 3 minutes, the call stalled and wouldn't start. While cranking, there was still a strong odor of gas and smoke/soot from the tail pipes. Even after sitting for a couple of minutes, I could still see and smell gas/smoke from the pipes.
The next morning, the car started just fine and ran good for about 30 minutes, then the idle began rising up and down and the CEL and rough idol started all over again exactly like the night before.
I ran the codes and got code 22, which appears to be Temperature Sensor. I've also noticed for the past month or so that the tachometer sometimes will not work.
My question is would a temp sensor cause these symptoms or maybe could it be the computer possible going out?
I also removed the computer and examined the caps that are know to go bad. They appear to all be normal with nothing leaking or deformation. I did also buy the caps that are know to go bad and plan replacing since the computer is already out.
Thank you,
***I fixed the problem. I decided to replace the caps in the computer, following the instructions posted. I also replaced the engine temp. sensor with a genuine Toyota part. The car runs great. All problems fixed. It's amazing what caps and a new temp sensor does. Thanks for the help.

yeah, likely ECU caps or the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (which is what code 22 is)
be sure to use the real genuine Toyota sensor p/n 89422-20010
if you shop hard online I think you can find it for $40-$48

Thank you for the information. One question though. I assume that, that sensor is the one that is close to the intake instead of the sensor on the radiator?
