I'v been having this code for couple of months now and it needs to go , Cats are expensive , I know cause I changed bank 2 once already ... never the less I am dealing with bank 1 now ... I need an expert opinion on this plz ... would a universal Magnaflow cat do the job and not bring out the code again? AND HOW CAN I TELL IF MY 98 LS400 IS FROM THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA OR NOT?

code P0430 is rarely ever a bad cat on an LS400, unless it has like 350K or more miles or has been abused with aftermarket engine or exhaust mods causing it to severely overheat for an extended period.

code P0430 is far more often O2 sensors or a faulty ECU

well one pretty fun way is to go to Toyota's Tech database for $15 and reprint your original window sticker! - you can also browse the real dealership service manual and all of the technical service bulletins for 3 days!

Update: Thanks to my respondents I appreciate the help , so I found out that my car is indeed California emission where the 02 sensors set on the pipe not on the cat itself , the original cat can be by passed by a 49 states cat aka eastern cat , the one I located has to be welded , AND ITS BY MAGNAFLOW ... Go to autpartswarehouse . com and search for SKU M6699004hm
