For what it's worth IMHO it would be good to measure how much ATF actually comes out to make filling easier. In my case with the 1991 car was level and out came out total of 2.25 litres.

that could save some time, but how much you take out doesn't really matter, what matters is what the dipstick reads, because the dipstick is the final arbiter of correct fluid level.

when you took some out, your system could have already been under or overfilled before you started

I knew I should have mentioned that we first checked that the oil level on dipstick was on the mark.

Point I was trying to make was that it took the guesswork out of equation ie. "shall I add this much or this much and how does it read then". Of course you need to read the dipstick to verify the result.

Idled it after work adding another ...75 quart or so. Engine was warm. Idled cor probably an hour. level on dipstick was at the top of cold.
Went to the gym and back (15 min hiway each way), checked level at idle, almost none on the stick. will add another half quart tomorrow and remeasure.

So. With engine idling, at operating temp, should i have the level at the top of c?

Assuming my cold idle is at C, after running on the highway i should be somewhere i. The hot section, if all the levels are proper?

The Cold dipstick mark is just to get it close when filling, the accurate measurement is the hot mark, and the car should have been driven for a while, like 1/2 hour, and parked on very level ground, and with it running in Park, shift through all the gears and put it back in Park, it should be at the top of the Hot crosshatch area or very slightly over (like 1-2 mm)

One area to note is that that upper ferrule can move if not crimped/attached well. My prior one did and it really screwed up filling levels. I didn't take notice till one day I was wiping it off and it moved. Each time then on when drawn or inserted it would slide up down the cable. Ugh... Bought a new one and it took a bit of fill-drain routines to dial it back in.

this makes it easy if you overshoot the mark

LS are you sure thats for pullign fluid out? LOL

Ok sim definitly low then, because after all that hgihway driving i was still low, HOT was definitely not even touched. Add half a quart tonight, rinse and repeat!

Just i swear I added as much as I drained out already lol.

PS, this could be due to low fluid, but anyone's tranny kind of ...hunt between 4th and 5th? if im taking it real easy (which I try to around town), it will be in 4th, then go in 5th, then quickly unlock the torque converter and the rpm wavers a couple 100, then will usually go back into 5th.
Could I just be at that speed and throttle position where it doesnt really know what it wants?

yes, that is exactly what it's made for - there is also a cylindrical model made by Mityvac that is also good.

lol, +1 for that reference haha. But really though, I was just going to say that, that "oil extractor" looks like the strangest combination between a bicycle pump and a bong... (Bike and Bake? *rimshot*)
