I still can't collect data for models shipped outside Japan.

Incidentally, below 2 lines have to be shifted to the upper part as I edited my original post #15.

A bit off topic, but do you have any specific knowledge of the VVTi ECUs? I'm interested in purchasing a Celsior engine/transmission with an uncut harness, but the ECU is missing and I'm not sure which to buy. My hope is they're all compatible. I believe the transmission part number is 35010-50111, if that helps.

'00 had some significant changes to the way the brakes worked, would stick to '98-99 if I was in your situation.

Now I've noticed when I drive (cruising, low throttle) at around 50kph (35mph?) at times it feels like it wants to change gear (up I assume) and the car gets all jumpy, almost like a throttle cut. The same thing has been happening at around 100kph (55mph). I'm not sure if it's gbox related or not?? I was pulling out to pass and as I was trying to accelerate over 100kph the engine would not continue to rev and it felt like I was getting a speed cut or similar.

Could this be an issue with a speed sensor?? The odo continues to read correctly.

Any more information that would be helpful??? Is this the kind of thing that a Toyota service shop would be able to diagnose??

Appreciate the help

Cheers,

Hi,
So I've done two things.... I bought the caps from digikey and had a local electrician fit them. This took a long time and in the meantime I noticed a second hand 50171 type ecu for sale so I bought that. The car runs good on the 50171 but still no speedo. So I waited until my repair was ready. Got that today and the car runs real good....... But no speedo. If I bang the top of the dash while driving the needle bounces up so it's not stuck.

What's my next course of action?? Speedo sensor on the gbox?? Or is there something that frequently goes wrong with the dash?? Any help much appreciated as always

Cheers
Karl

the speedo problem can be ECU caps, dash cluster caps, or an actual mechanical sticking of the speedometer needle itself (the original lubricant gets gummy after 15 years or so.

there is not an easy way to quickly determine which is causing the issue, other than just fixing all of these, that I am aware of.

Cool I'll pull the dash and see what the caps look like, I assume they'll just be on the back of the gauge cluster?

yes, but these caps are even less likely to show any physical evidence of degradation, so the visual inspection really doesn't do much

not a way that is substantially easier than just replacing them, that I am aware of

Hi, simple question

Could anyone here tell me if I can replace my 89661-50170 with the 89661-50171? If I read the post right it should work but since I would be actually spending money to acquire the other part (50171) I really would like some additional comfort if at all possible

Thanks in advance
