I've been putting this off forever, and finally decided against it for this reason: starter. It seems, from my limited observations and posts by people here, that those who washed their engines experienced their starter fail more than those who did not wash their engines. I don't know how to wash the underside, which is all too close to the starter, without getting any water on the starter, so I gave up.
I actually did do a light wash of some parts of the underside and was so nervous I don't want to do it again.

Rag with engine degreaser and wipe it off for the topside. Bottom is pretty resistant to water since that is the side that will see water with frequency when it rains. One still needs to be careful.

The lower engine cover does help in reducing road grime and it channels air under the car as the designers intended to help in achieving the coefficient of drag that is does. I wipe the engine bay in ours 1-2 times a year and the car is driven 12K miles annually. Mostly dust so it is pretty easy to care for.
