i would think even if the input shaft seal was leaking only a small amount of fluid would be missing and not completely dry out. it is normal to have metal shavings in the magnetic drain bolt (looks like sludge or mud).

metal chunks on the other hand, are bad news! gl with the replacement!

Depends on the cause of the leak. If the seal just simply "wore-out" then usually you won't starve a diff for fluid unless the input pinion is offset well below the center line of the diff.

Now if there was a lot of bearing play at the input, and THAT cause the leak the. It would be pretty easy to starve a diff for fluid in a short period of time. Of course there would be a VERY obvious noising coming from the diff well before the failure point, and you'd be able to feel some pretty wonky things going on at all times when driving.... But considering the core demographic these cars are coming FROM, and the fact that there are two around me driven by people 80+ and look like they drive/park by brail.... It's possible for such crazy things to happen!! lol

Or you could have the owners kid/grandkid out hooning doing burn outs and nuetral dumps!

I will take some pics. You can tell that it has been leaking for a while and definitely from the front of the input shaft (where the drive shaft is connected) . Once I get the old one out I will open it up.
