Car won't go into park or reverse without pushing in safety switch near shifter?help!
I have a 1997 Lexus LS 400 and for some reason it won't go into reverse or park without pushing in the little safety switch near the shifter. Anyone know why? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the shift lock control solenoid is latched mechanically or electrically. The first step is to distinguish it.
If it's electrically, I would check the stop lamp switch or the fuse to it first.
There is a shift lock control solenoid next to the shift lever and it is driven by the shift lock control relay which is driven by the ECU. The attached drawing is for a JDM and locations of those might be a bit different from yours but those indicated components might be related to your problem if not the switch or the fuse.
