if you want to use a synthetic ATF Mobil one and Max life both work ok in a 90 Lexus 400 I have a 91 LS and have 318,000 miles on the same trans using M 1 changing it every 30k flushing it thru my trans cooler. My 1986 Toyota Cressida trans went 529,000 no problems with Mobile one fluid. I am now using Max Life synthetic AFT for my power steering which is original for cost buy it at Wall Mart. Toyota type 4 will work just fine just change it at around 30k that includes m1 if you want you trans to last. My goal is 400,000 to 500,000 on my 1991 Lexus LS keeping everything original I also go 15,000 miles on engine oil changes using M1 and no problems no oil burning I would like to see a Mercedes or BMW do that.

 

i actually recall that mazda also uses the same ATF as toyota type-IV as the aisin makes their transmissions as well. if you can get it cheaper at the mazda dealership too, go for it. around my area a bottle of type-IV can be had at less than $5/quart.

as for the rear end, that is not as sensitive to OEM fluids as the tranny. any synthetic 75w-90 gear oil will suffice.

 

Yes, you are right regarding the ATF type-IV, but regarding to the rear end, I don't think so.

 

ive been running redline..before that Valvoline 75w-90. ive had my car for 10 years and 70,000 miles.

 

please explain more yamae. i don't see how the differential would be sensitive to gear oil, but i would love to hear your input. i know the OEM stuff is not synthetic, so upgrading can only benefit.

 

It should be the hypoid type of gear oil and API GL-5.

 

I don't know of any synthetic gear oils that aren't gl-5. gl-4 is for older gear boxes to protect bearings that are made of certain metals that gl-5 will ruin.

Some manual transmisions require synthetic GL-4 and oil companies are supplying it. Don't use GL-4 for our precious cars.

 

Like anything, read the owners manual and only run the specified fluid type stated in the back.

unless there has been an update since printing, it is always a bad idea to deviate from the engineer prescribed fluid types. do so at your own peril.
