Default 1st gen LS400 - Service your rear CV joints!

A warning for those with 1st Gen LS400 (90-94): I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you service your rear CV joints (two on each side for a total of four). Mines were NOT broken or tear anything but when I replaced those CV boots, there were NO grease left inside the joints - all have turned to some kind of light brown LIQUID! They drained out just like old oil when I took off the CV belt clips. Even if your CVs are not broken, if you see moist DUST collecting around the boots AND on the axles, that 's a bad sign. Those CV boots are designed to hold grease but not liquid. BOOTs are cheap but axles are $$$$$$$ - I will not need to explain more...

What was the vehicle's mileage prior to you servicing the CV joints?

I bought OEM boots a while back ($120.00 something) and did the job myself. There were nothing special about this except the job was super dirty. I do make a mark on the axles so I can reinstall everything back in the same way that they came off. This is a very common service so I guess any garage could do this - just call them up for an estimate. Non dealers here in DFW metroplex want around +/- $550.00. This is also a good time to drain and refill your differential gear box. I used Mobil1 synt. 75-90 gear oil. You will need to buy 2 quarts for this service.
