Default GS400 engine in LS400?

Can I replace a 1998 LS400 engine and transmission with a 1998 GS400 engine and transmission?

i'd wait for someone more qualified to reply but i'm not sure if it's that simple. there are a few differences between the two but i'm not sure if that's enough to make them not compatible

I always thought they were the same engine with slightly different tuning specs.

My 98 LS400 threw a main bearing at 250,000 miles. The camshaft is not damaged and I could replace the bearings but wondered if I should replace the engine and transmission with a lower mileage one. The local junkyard has a 98 GS400 which is what led to the question. I have seen a place in Dallas that sells imported engines that advertises the LS, GS and SC 400 engines as being the same. What years was the VVTI engine used? I've been looking for 98-00. Is this correct? Thanks for everyone's help.

engine internals are the same, but the whole assemblies will not interchange. The sumps are different, ecu/wiring is different, and the transmissions are different (tail housing+yoke)
