yeah there is a neutral safety switch on the gear selector that is probably sticking or bad. just jiggle the level while in 'park' and see if the starter engages. also as legender said, try starting the car in 'neutral' as well.

It is attached to the side of the AT near the ATF cooling line.
It has the special electric grease inside to protect electrical contacts from the corrosion and keep the contact resistance low enough. Problem is the grease does not last forever. When it is aged, it begins to loose the capability to keep the low resistance of contacts. Yours must be in this situation.
Dealers just replace the switch unit and charge you more than $300 since the switch unit alone costs nearly $300.
I usually don't replace the switch as dealers do. I only clean contacts electrically using a battery and a bulb. I even don't remove the switch. I have posted the way how to do it a few years ago and I'm sure you can find it searching the forum. A search is always a good friend.

So you turn the key and nothing? You turn the key and the engine turns yet won't start? Showing the wrong shifter position could be the shift selector switch also called neutral safety switch. Its on the transmission case where the shift linkage goes from the shifter.
