91 ls400 - wont shift into PARK
Drives beautifully - been having a/c problems but that's another thread. Pulled into parking lot tonight and tried to shift into "PARK' - would not happen. No noise, no clunk, no strange sound...just pulled into park the car and it wont go into PARK.
All other gears work. Using Shift-Override still does not let it get into PARK.
HELP - I had to leave window down at home tonight and disconnect battery as I can't get the key out except in PARK....
Arrrgggghhhhh......hope it's simple????
Thanks much for any thoughts / ideas....

you may have an obstruction at the shifter either under the center console or under the car. you will need to remove the center console wood grain panel to check, or inspect the transmission gear selector lever outside under the car for anything out of the oridinary.

I don't know for sure, since I have not fooled around with shifter and transmission on the ls yet. But other things it may be, is an internal problem in the transmission stopping the linkage from moving into P. Or the electrical switch, or like mentioned above the shifter itself. I don't have time to study it now.

Doesn't this have a switch on the brake pedal that allows the tranny to move in/out of park? On my old Acura, that switch broke and I had this same problem. All gears worked but could not move in/out of park. I'm not close to mine now, but think there is a switch/mechanism that the brake arm hits to allows the movement in/out of park.

This happened to my '93 a couple months ago, got it to shift back into park somehow, never really figured it out but it hasn't troubled me again. I too had to unplug the battery to remove the key. Instead of leaveing the window down, could you just unplug the battery long enough to remove the key and hook it back up? At least then you wouldn't have a window sitting open. Best of luck

I sure didn't find much in the manual about the shifter. Just the electricals, there is the shift lock solenoid a shift lock switch, and a shift lock ecu. Also the brake light switch is part of the system. So who knows for sure whats stopping it.

Hey guys - I am the crazy one here - forgive me. This (won't shift to park) happend at night and it was the result of a broken machine bolt I had laying on the console that fell between the shifter and the front edge of console - it was black and I couldn't see it and it was keeping the shift out of park.
Sorry for the false item here. Thanks.
