Hmmm, I had an extra MAF meter, so I tried that one also and unplugged it while engine was running. Engine immediately shut off. So that's the same with two meters. This is a 1997, stock engine.
I think I will replace spark plugs, that's a cheap and easy try.
Thanks!

Well, an update. My father in law was driving it last week (it was running deccent) and then while he was out at a store, it wouldn't start. After about an hour he was able to get it started again.
I took the car to check it out and it had MAF error, intake air temp error, catalytic efficience error and crank position error. I thought this nonsense might be attributable to the ECU capacitor issue (this is a 1997), so I replaced the caps yesterday.
Drove it pretty hard for about an hour this morning, lots of 6K rpm pulls, good transmission shifts, several times of shutting down and restarting. I thought all was good.
I went to start back up after about 30 mintutes and no start. I was able to work on it a little and there was no spark. And was getting crank position circuit code occasionally. Lots of cranking, no spark, no start.
I looked at the sensor and it was 1200 ohms, so seems fine. As I'm doing that, I see some odd wiring around the sensor. Geez....previous mechanic (not a good one) screwed something up with the sensor and must have cut the wiring between the sensor and the harness. So he spliced in two wires (positive & negative) with single conductor #18 AWG. Each wire was spliced in with 2 butt connectors....not a bit of solder in sight. The original cable for the sensor has blue jacket and is a shielded two - conductor cable. I squeezed on the connectors, tried to start again and it started and ran fine.
So......I need to replace this *&^%$## wire mess. Any ideas where I could get some shielded two conductor (probably #20'ish AWG) cable to splice in? What a mess.....
