1995 ls400 idle issue/smoke/confusion
Ok so recently picked up this 95 ls400. Has about 153k miles on it, some issues but nothing too bad. Well I drove it home, not a single issue other than some smoking.I learned from this site about the ps lines leaking into the intake so I capped them, smoking gone.next night, I'm driving it as I noticed the temp gauge fluctuate and the heat wasnt working, so tonight I replaced the thermostat, temp switch and flushed the cooling system with a Prestone product...got the system bled and heat working ...temperature gauge read around the third line ( counting the big block at the bottom of the gauge)..I go for a drive and all seems good, the temp went up to just above the third line but stayed there. I drove a short (2 Mile tops) twisty road pretty aggressively and all was good. Right as I go to turn into my neighborhood the idle drops and the car has like 30% power. I get into my garage and I notice some smoke funneling through the back of the engine bay, still low rough idle. So I check the oil and it looks fine, start it back up, more smoke but now I notice it's coming from the exhaust. Still a small amount from the engine bay but a steady stream of white clouds from the exhaust. So does anyone have Any idea on what I should check out next? I'm extremely mechanically inclined(ase master tech) but this is my first 1uz..any help would be greatly appreciated , I apologize about the novel and/or if I put this in the wrong place

Welcome to Club Lexus.
The PS lines still capped? The white smoke is usually pretty minimal even when leaking moderately. WHite smoke/steam outthe back makes me think of a head gasket. How's the coolant level? Additionally can any error codes be read?

What is the smoke? Its a master tech question.
What does it smell like? Is it gas or coolant smell?
Are you getting any combustion products in the cooling system?
Are you loosing coolant? That is, is it disappearing?
Any codes set?
So what is the temp switch? I know of 3 temperature sense items and yes one is a switch for cold start valve, but I don't know if a 95 has that. The other 2 are for engine ecu and gauge.
If smell is coolant then head gasket and that would explain the no heat, and would be an air lock.
If smell is gas then most likely the ecu, could be's are fuel pressure reg, leaky injector / cold start valve if it has one. Even with a bad ECT I don't think it would over fuel that much.
Missing ? could also be ignition related.

The ps lines are still capped...I did not see any coolant loss when I checked it last night. The s of the smoke is kinda hard to describe. To me it smells more like atf then coolant. Ps my heat wasnt working Before this happened, now it works. No codes present.
Edit: came back from a short drive, definitely a gas smell to the smoke now. Also no check engine light but a p0110 code. Going to do some testing and see what I find

Mmk so I tested the Mac using this procedure (attached)...looks like my maf is bad. Using two different meters the Maf what a at a steady 1 on my meter screen. I just find it hard to believe that this died mid drive on me and doesn't register any resistance.

Alright well now it's all fixed...I'll admit I feel a little dumb now that I figured it out but I'll share the issue. When I was putting the passenger side timing cover back on, I must have not routed the coil wire correctly annnnd the can gear ate it. So I took this opportunity to replace the wires, runs great, oddly enough better than before. So thanks for the suggestions , my bad for wasting this thread space.
Ps maf ended testing good when I put it back into the car?? Codes disappeared after I fixed the wire.

You did not waste nothing coming here. I'm sure more than just me is happy you did. Because no matter what the problem is with any LS, it is very nice to know the symptoms and the cure. Thanks a bunch for letting us know what the cure and problem was. And no matter how good a tech is, we all goof up, and can't always figure out the problem. Good job.
