The new resting Battery reading from the cigarette is 9.5. I just went to start her up. Was sitting at 9.5. She started on the first crank because it was running earlier I think. On start-up reading goes to 14.3. After Idle for a couple minutes and turn off. turn back to ON right away, reading is down to 12.1.

I could put a new battery in and experience the same issue when starting at first. I could have a parasitic drain. A new battery is the first step to finding that out. If a new battery fixes the starting issue and keeps a charge then I'm possibly home free.
Hmm resting that's low..way too low

Does the it crank strong though or is it weak? How are the batter cables? Corrosion?

I may take it to Canadian Tire and buy a battery and get them to inspect it and see what they say.
Is this the same guy that told you the alt was bad before, or same place different guy? I don't have a clue why the guy would tell you that you have a bad starter, that has nothing to do with charging the battery. Second opinion somewhere else is a good idea.

9.5 is very low but will still start the car. Starting the car and going to 14.3 is good, means the alternator is working. Turning off then turning key to ON (not running) and having it at 12.1 means the battery charged. (Again, Alt working) Battery draining while sitting means bad battery. Ya might have a dead cell in it or (something I've done back in my youth) maybe the battery was installed with a screw or something else sitting in the battery tray which would cut through the bottom of the battery, draining the acid.

Ya same place different guy, but many people have diagnosed the starter. I took the 1998 in for a test of the battery/Alt/starter. They said battery is shot and the starter is bad. So this is like the 5th guy who said it was the starter. I bought the car cheap because it was diagnosed by Toyota with a bad starter(according to the guy i bought it from) but previous owner didn't want to get it done. From what I read on CL starter seemed to line up. I was starting thinking the Alt was bad too but its ok. I am getting New battery/ Starter/ Gaskets done. If I ever need to replace the ALT I still may go with the MECHMAN.

OK yea, now I remember. You bought it knowing the starter was bad. The green car, right? I thought these people were saying the starter was the cause of the battery going dead. It sucks when ya have 2 or 3 different problems at the same time cuz ya get confused on all the symptoms. I hate it if I need to bring my car in to get something diagnosed but if ya can't figure it out no matter what ya do then it's worth it instead of throwing parts at it to no avail. At least now ya know. Good luck.

Comparing a carquest piece of junk 'rebuilt' alternator to a Denso is night and day. That Denso looks brand spankin' new, truly a Remanufactured. The chain stores retailer 'refurb' is total trash.

Waiting on the 455 dollar delivered Longo Lexus new power steering pump and will get Blackbird back in shape,He deserves it

And I'll use Billy D. Powells Bleach jug cover on this alt,So thanks Billy and Yodaone for the alternator advice.

Billy's cover,post #13

2001-2003 LS430 alternators feature a three pin connector socket and are compatible with (1995-1997?) 1998-2000 LS400.

2004-2006 LS430 alternators use a 4 pin connector socket and are not plug-and-play.

Lexus rebuilt alternators replace all internal components...with OEM components..the only thing reused are the Aluminum housings.

Big box auto parts doesn't disclose what parts are rebuilt or replaced....expect the worst.

Their lifetime warranty lulls you into thinking it is a quality rebuild.

Sometimes they just throw a set of brushes on there and give them a coat of paint.

The Denso says remanufactured in the USA on the box. The extra nut and bolt went into the mail today.

1. Does anyone knows why the 90-94 & 98-00 LS400's alternators are rated at 100 Amps while the 95-97 is only at 80 Amps?
2. Will the 01-03 LS430's alternator also fits the LS400's 95-97?

if memory serves, they have a different plug.. I could be totally wrong though, but that’s my recollection.
Edit: my memory failed. It was the 90-92 model that had a round plug. The 93-up used an oval plug. The oval plugs look similar on the 95-97 alternator and ls430 alternator.

just make sure you install the bolt in the correct spot, you'll know if you put the bolt in the wrong spot, trust me

i actually have an extra bolt and nut I could sell you if you wanted.
Did you install the 430 alternator? Did you change any wiring or fuses?

Did you have to install any different wiring or fuses? Any issues? Is it better?
