Default '96 LS400 w/ P0340, P0500, P0770 - Trans?

Just bought this LS400. Looks good, but there are three error codes and the transmission only works in reverse.

I'm getting P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor #1, P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfn, and P0770 Solenoid E.

Could these all be related to the camshaft position sensor? I'm going to change the tranny fluid this weekend and check the wiring to the CPS.

I appreciate any advice you have.

Thanks!

Before changing the trans fluid you need to figure out which shift solenoid E is, since if you remove the pan, and don't fix it you will be doing it again. Cam sensor is not related to the transmission codes. The vehicle speed and solenoid are related to the transmission. There maybe others here that have dealt with that solenoid on that year car.

Have you checked the level and condition of the transmission fluid?

I've checked the fluid and it was right in the middle of Hot and Cold indicators. The transmission was not hot at all (since it won't go into gear).

I've found 3 used solenoids from a junk yard and will be replacing the ones in the car. Maybe this will work.

Any other advice?

Thanks!

Opened the tranny on the LS00 and there are four solenoids. The SC300 had only three, so I"m guessing I don't have the AO340 transmission, correct?

Does anyone know if the lock -up solenoid from the SC300 will work for the LS400? Are they the same part number?

What transmission do I have in the LS400?

Thanks for the help!!

Check your driver door sill. The information should be there.
You absolutely have a A340E.

So I've removed the solenoids and there are four. I'm guessing the first solenoid (towards the front of the car) is the lock-up solenoid.

Why can't I find a lock-up solenoid (or solenoid kit) with the four solenoids? When I search A340E, I get lots of kits with only three solenoids.

My transmission has 2 solenoids that are much longer than the ones pictured in the kits.

Any source for the longer, correct lockup solenoid for my transmission?

Thanks again for the help!

Something is bugging me about your car. Your shift solenoid E will not prevent your transmission from moving the car forward. It will only prevent the torque converter locking up / lock it up constantly. I am no transmission expert but I feel that you need to check your shifter linkage, see if it's actually telling the transmission to shift, then throw a pressure gauge on the transmissio to check if the fluid pump is working, and if it is crack open your ECU to inspect your caps before you start throwing parts at it. If your line pressure is low then your transmission wont drive it forward. If your forward clutch is gone it also wont move. Most of all if your ECU is flaky it will not let the trans do anything either. Again don't start throwing parts at every issue that computer tells you is wrong with the car. It can be as simple as wiring problems or ground problems or cap problems. But everything is old and finicky, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the advice. I still haven't been able to get the forward gears to work. The shifter sounds like it's moving the linkage, but I'll get back under the car and look.

Where Can I find the ECU? I've seen posts about re-soldering , so I'll check it out.
