1996 Lexus LS400 Cold Start Hesitation
Hey all, just bought a '96 LS400. Car runs and drives great. Only thing I notice is when I crank it with a cold start it cranks for an extra half second. Nothing too odd just different.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? How did you resolve? I just ordered a fuel filer/plugs basic tune up.
Also had a questions about the radio. The car does have the Nakimichi audio and was wondering if I reset the battery terminal would I be prompted for a security code for the radio ?

Mine does the same thing with starting a second longer when cold and I haven't worried about it one bit. My guess is injector leakage or a fuel pump check valve - and the extra few seconds of cranking is repressurizing the system. LS will only run the fuel pump when cranking + oil pressure - there is no key on engine off prime. Another guess is the oiling system is building pressure.
The nakamichi will not give you any problems if you disconnect the battery. No security codes.

seems to be widespread as the early ucf20s age more. my 95 is like that. its a little grumpy when first started in the morning. if I let it sit for more than a few days without starting it, its a little hard to crank and for a few mins it runs .........absolutely horribly. then it warms up and its fine.

mine starts up fine, 97 LS400 w/ 265k, but the fast idle is really rough when warming up and coming to stop lights.
The RPMs dip down low to 2-300, and then the fast idle valve catches and bumps it up to about 8-900, but its a pretty abrupt RPM kick when it tries to recover. Only does this during warm up though, all other times its not present. I can't figure out what's causing this.
I did the coolant temp TW sensor, as well as just bled the cooling system and did a timing belt, water pump about 3 months back. New plugs, wires and PCV valve.

Ours sits for days/weeks lately but will start easily on the first turn of the key.
Some thoughts:
Good- battery along with clean terminals for the pos-neg cables. Cap, plugs and wires. Vacuum lines would be some of the basics.
If the battery cable is disconnected, the radio should be fine.

I have only put 40k on my 99 since I got it in 2010 and done the starter solenoid thing, but mine starts so quick you almost think it was running before you turned the key.. since we went to one car, ours runs every day, but we dont travel any more, so it is just short trips... but it is a dream to drive it.
