Smile Transmission filter

Hey guys, I was just wondering is it really necessary to change the filter? By the way I have a 95 ls400 with 122k miles. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Most times you can just take it out and clean it real good. Which is a good ideal when you start racking up the miles.

I replaced the one on my '91, soon after I got it about 9 years ago. On my car I think "screen" would be a better name than "filter." So yes, I could have easily cleaned and reinstalled, but since I already had it, I put the new one in.

If when draining there is no chunky stuff coming out you shouldn't need to even drop the pan, especially if the miles is under 200K.

The link below may help you to decide. It was when the odometer was at about 150,000km.

That makes sense, but here's a counterpoint to consider:

If the pan has never been dropped and cleaned, there is likely to be a collection of clutch residue on the bottom, not causing any problems. If the fluid is very old, and you shock the system by adding fresh fluid, there is a chance that the additives in the fresh fluid will dissolve the sediment, allowing it to flow through the AT and cause problems.

Well, I don't think the pan has ever been dropped, not too sure about that though. I guess I should just clean the filter or replace it then. I've got to think about this for a bit. Thanks oldskewel

I would drop the pan if i were you. No need to waste money and replace the filter. Clean the old filter screen and reuse. If everything looks good, you never need to drop the pan again.

I would just use my video scope to look in there. I've dropped the pans on a few high mile cars to find like new condition, but they were Subaru's.

The transmission seems to have more of a strainer than an actual filter. I did mine at 253k and it wasn't horribly dirty, but not totally clean either. I was just curious about the health of my tranny

See,,,,, looks great, like I said if no crustys drop out, there is really no need to remove the pan, it can be a pain, cleaning the gasket surfaces and all that.
