Need help. Differential dilemma.
My current differential went a few days ago so I ordered one off eBay listed as 90-94 it showed up and its not the same dif as the one on my 92, it has 4 mounting points versus the 3 I have and 4 bolts that connect it to the driveshaft versus the 3 on mine. Is this how all 1990 ls400 dif are or did they send me the wrong one? Is it possible to swap the input shafts from mine and use it on the one they sent me?

And looks like
What would this be? Or how would I find out?

Bought it and noticed that the gasket needed to be replaced and there was an intermittet clunking noise from the rear end which i thought was a u-joint, figured I could make it last a bit if I changed the gear oil often, before I could get it home it clunked a few times then the gears snagged and sheared the teeth which left me with no power getting to the wheels and I had to call AAA

based on what? Differntial gears are wear items, they do wear even when properly maintained.
Given that the diff fluid is supposed to be replaced periodically and the sels are wear items as well, occasional (albeit not pattern) diff failure is not unusual.

Unless improperly set up, and run with the wrong lube they last a very long time. I had a job for 10 plus years working on class 8 trucks and industrial equipment. I never saw a gear set worn out that was properly set up and not abused. And believe me those gear sets I was around where much more highly loaded than the ones in your LS400 are. And technically the differential gears are not a wear item. Any more than the main and rod bearings in your engine can be called a WEAR item yeah they will wear when something isn't right. That is what proper lubrication is suppose to eliminate or minimize. With the correct EP lube and the correct heat treat the wear of hypoid gears is pretty much nonexistent. I'd like to know how many times that million mile LS had its differential changed. And how many miles on this 92 that has a bad diff? My 90 with about 300K has zero dif problems, and the oil came out looking like new. The thing that will kill the ring and pinion long before wear is metal fatigue, cracking and flaking of the surfaces.

Just do a million mile search on youtube, there are a lot of cars and trucks that do it. Oh and transmissions and differentials are not being fixed to do it. Tires and brakes are the wear items on these vehicles. So how many miles on this Ls with the ruined diff?
